Since technology gifted us with the ability to block the horrifying creation of pop-up ads, internet advertising has taken a turn for the better. Website managers are able to organize pay-per-click advertisements through programs like AdSense that only display ads on their website that are related to the topics contained in that site.
Users don't have to click any ads if they don't want to, and ads are usually out of the way and non-intrusive to the website's layout.
The ADvantages to this system are providing both users and website managers with added value. A user is not bombarded with irrelevant ads, and a website manager is often able to provide the services contained in their website for free to users since advertising revenue covers the costs of these services.
Recently, AOL decided to make a bold move away from their classic monthly billing systems and move towards providing free service for its users supported by revenue streams from well-placed advertisements... Evidence that this idea can work even for well established companies.

Question is though, how do you build the high volume web traffic in order to obtain profitable advertising? Without some sort of pull to your site, be it news, media content, product demos, gossip, etc. etc., there's no way to get internet users to your site.
You can't have one without the other, and it's a challenge that many companies are coming to realize.
Another issue to debate internally at your firm is whether or not external advertisers are even right for your company. Does it make sense to have a dating website advertise on a doctor's office page? Probably not, but a pharma company ad? You bet your britches.
The original question remains however, of drawing more traffic to your site. I for one am unfamiliar with exactly how it works, however the concept of search engine optimization really seems to be the direction most companies are heading. When a potential customer of yours types "mortgage" into google, then you want your bank to show up first. Dreamscape Marketing can make that happen for you with their website and search engine optimization packages.
I know because they did it for me.
